Attard 0 Żurrieq 1
In a clash between two teams at the bottom end of the standings, one goal was enough for Żurrieq to have the better of Attard and register their second win of the season.
Victory lifted the Reds off bottom place in the standings and they are now one point ahead off second-bottom Attard.
Żurrieq dictated the run of play during the first half where they encountered little resistance from their opponents.
Attard were at toils to get past the Żurrieq defence who displayed a better tactical shape.
But, the match took a turn in favour of Attard in the second half, where they displayed greater efforts and had plenty of opportunities to save the game, but failed to profit.
Żurrieq were close to opening the score after 20 minutes, when Johan Briffa’s free-kick skimmed the woodwork. The Reds were at it again on 27 minutes when from a Matthew Genuis free-kick, Attard goalkeeper Rodney J. Ubbergen turned the ball to a corner.
Żurrieq scored the all-important goal six minutes later when Josef Briffa’s stinging drive from the distance flew past the Attard goalkeeper.
Attard were the better side in the second half, where they managed to be more constructive on the attacking side than they had succeeded in doing in the first 45 minutes.
They were close to an equaliser ten minutes from time, when Traykov’s effort from the distance took goalkeeper Ellul by surprise but somehow the Żurrieq no. 1 managed to tip the ball over the bar.
Two minutes later, Żurrieq were close to doubling their lead, when Johan Briffa’s first-timer from inside the area went inches wide.
Attard piled up the pressure and five minutes from time Agius’s effort flew just wide and soon after the same Attard forward came close when his lob was pushed away by the alert Ellul.
